Description:

(1887 - 1985) French artist whose naive style incorporating subjects of Russian and Jewish life made him one of the foremost artists of this century. Important content A.L.S. in German, 2pp. 4to., New York, [1941], to Mrs. Morris Troper, in part: "...Our trip was beautiful, the sky, the ocean, even the boat (we have to thank you for the stateroom); only not all the people on the boat were beautiful. But all that has passed. We are now in New York which is beautiful and blessed, but which is also semi-tropical where we are terribly suffering from the heat. We should like to go to the country soon... We do not have any news from the children and we are very worried. We found here a cable, asking us for the two transit visas for Spain and Portugal. Did you, dear Mrs. Troper, hear from the children? Is Mr. Katzki already in Lisbon? Forgive us for troubling you but you were so nice and affectionate with us that we gain the courage to write to you about it..." He goes on to inquire after their luggage, and signs boldly at the conclusion in blue ink. Shows original mailing folds, else very good. Gen. Morris Troper, an eminent figure in the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), was instrumental in Chagall's escape and helped Chagall's daughter smuggle the artist's works from France to the U.S. The Chagalls fled Nazi-occupied France in May of 1941, having been supplied with forged passports by U.S. consul to France Hiram Bingham.
