Description:

MAP OF GUN POSITIONS DEFENDING D-DAY BEACHES
Excellent original 1:147,700-scale map, 43 1/2" x 29 1/2" (sight), published by the British Hydrographic Office of the Admiralty on March 15, 1944, and showing updated information to April 15. The map gives an overview of the Normandy coast from the Cotentin Peninsula to the region east of Le Havre, showing each of the beaches taken by Allied troops during the Operation Overlord amphibious landings on June 6, 1944. Each of the five landing beaches are clearly labeled, as well as a sixth beach, code-named "Band", which was to receive heavy naval bombardment if the German gun battery at Merville could not be taken. Most interestingly, this map shows every known German artillery position defending the beaches, each designated according to type and caliber by a color-coded dot. Colored rings show each position's maximum estimated range and degree of rotation, a vital piece of information for the ships of the invading force. A legend at bottom left further lists the caliber and ranges of the German guns, along with a key to the various types of emplacements. German radar installations are also noted. The map is marked "Top Secret – Not to Be Used For Navigation" at top right. It shows toning overall, with flattened folds, and is mounted in a black wood frame, else very good.
