Description:

Striking bird's-eye plan showing French forces besieging the English town of Bethune and its surrounding countryside during the War of Spanish Succession in the summer of 1710. The map was engraved by J. Basire and published by James & Paul Knapton, London, 1750. The sheet measures 19.75 x 15.5 in. overall with a decorative title cartouche, legend, and compass rose located at the bottom right. The bottom margin contains another title ('Plan of Bethune'), yet unfortunately appears to have been slightly trimmed, removing its original subtitle: 'For Mr. Tindal's Continuation of Mr. Rapin's History of England'. Slight .5 in. tears along right edge, minor ink transfer of the title on bottom margin, else fine condition.
