Description:

(1892 – 1962) American lieutenant general commanding the 9th Infantry Division and later XII Corps in the campaign in Western Europe, playing a large part in the Battle of the Bulge. Eddy also lad in North Africa, Sicily, and in under Patton in the drive to the Rhine. Fine association lot of two T.L.S.'s "Matt" as Commandant on Command and General Staff College letterhead, 5pp. total 4to., Fort Leavenworth, Ks., 1948, to CLARENCE R. HUEBNER (1888-1972), American major general who commanded the 1st Infantry Division in its assault on Omaha Beach, in the drive across France, at the Hurtgen Forest and in the battle of Aachen. In one letter, Eddy discusses the students at the college being given a demonstration by the Navy and the opportunity to observe "Operation Combine III" He further describes the reorganization of the college and moves on to politics: "...The people in the Pentagon seem to be getting more philosophical each day about the tension caused by the Russian situation...the tension will probably last the rest of our lives...and our children's lives. My only hope is that we can keep it...[from] getting any worse..." The second letter is largely friendly, asking for help in obtaining his sister-in-law a transit pass in Germany, discussing mutual friends, and closing with the hope: "...for your sake, the tremendous pressure you and Lucius Clay have been working under lately will soon let up..." File holes in margins, else fine. With carbon copies of Huebner's associated letters as well.
