Description:

MANHATTAN PROJECT
A very rare first edition of the book The Atomic Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagazaki, released by the Manhattan Project Atomic Bomb Investigating Group on July 30, 1946, published by the U.S. Government, 42pp. with 101 pp. of photographs and four classified aeronautical maps marked: "Restricted Emergency Provisional Edition, for use by War and Navy Department Agencies...". Hardbound in linen with gold lettering on the spine, conspicuously marked "Copy No. 8". The inside cover is stamped: "Department of Engineering, United States Military Academy". Apparently fewer than 30 copies of this work were published, and our copy was discarded from West Point at some point in the 1970s after being microfilmed. Without a doubt, the "Emergency Provisional Editions" were returned to the government for proper destruction, thus making this surviving copy the scarcest of WWII books. Along with an 8" x 10" b/w, photograph showing "Little Boy" and a view of its aftermath, signed by Enola Gay pilot PAUL TIBBETS, bombardier TOM FEREBEE, navigator DUTCH VAN KIRK, and radio operator DICK SCOBIE. Fine condition.
