Description:

MANFRED VON RICHTOFEN
(1892 - 1918) "The Red Baron". German fighter pilot with the Imperial German Army Air Service, considered the ace-of-aces of World War I, being officially credited with 80 air combat victories and awarded the Pour le Merite. As leader of his "Flying Circus", von Richtofen ruled the airspace about him until, incredibly, he was mortally wounded while engaged in a dogfight by a bullet shot from the trenches below. Superb war-date S.P. 3 3/8" x 5 1/4" sepia showing the bemedaled flyer in uniform from the waist, up, boldly signed adding his rank as captain, and dated March 8, 1918, less than six weeks before his death. Very fine condition.
