Description:

MANCHOUKUO CHINESE SEEK AN AUDIENCE WITH HITLER
An excellent collection of 24 letters and documents concerning the efforts of a Japanese-controlled trade organization from Manchoukuo, the Japanese puppet state in Manchuria and eastern Inner Mongolia, to have a private audience with Nazi Chancellor Adolf Hitler. The documents, almost all originating from the Reichschancellery and the Foreign Ministry, date from between August 22 and September 26, 1938. The grouping begins with a list of those included in the entourage, 18 people, led by Minister of Finance Han Yun-Chieh. On Aug. 22, Ministry of Foreign Affairs functionary 'Strachwitz' writes the Chancelery suggesting that Hitler meet with Han and his two top aides. In the margin appears an initialed pencil note from Reichsminister and Minister of the Presidential Chancellery OTTO MEISSNER: 'Yes! Time still available. M'. On Sep. 20, 1938 Meissner sends a signed letter to WERNER KIEWITZ (1891-1965), German diplomat later punished with assignment to the murderous Dirlewanger Brigade. He advises that Hitler has accepted a meeting with the delegation, reserving the right to decline later 'depending on the political situation'. Hitler also asks for a 'qualified translator'. On Sep. 26, Hitler gave the Chinese an audience for 15 minutes, and on the same day Meissner prepared an initialed note for his file summarizing the meeting: '...The chairman of the commission assured the Fuhrer of Manchuria's friendship for Germany and its Fuhrer, and also of its firm determination to stand together with her against the common enemy, Bolshevism...[The Fuhrer] emphasized the necessity of the joint struggle against Bolshevism, the universal enemy, whose ominous activities had again been openly displayed in the current crisis...'. Also included is a letter sent from Han Yun-Chieh at some later date to either Hitler or, more likely, the Foreign Ministry, thanking them for the visit and adding: '...We have watched with great enthusiasm how in your country under the leadreship of the Fuhrer...the whole people have come together...' Finally, there is a 12pp. 4to. program in German setting forth the delegation's schedule during its visit to Berlin. Many documents not translated, worthy of further research. Overall very good.
