Description:

MANCHESTER REGIMENT TRENCH CAP
World War I-era British Army trench cap of khaki twill fabric, with a soft bill, band and crown allowing the cap to be easily stowed in a pocket when not in use. The cap bears the cap badge insignia of the Manchester Regiment at the front, with a brown leather chin strap, likely a later replacement, secured over the bill by two brass buttons emblazoned with the Egypt battle honor. Two black riveted vent appear of each side of the crown. The interior of the cap is lined with khaki twill, faintly inscribed with the initials "WSJ" in black ink. The lining also bears a size 7 stamp identifying the retailer or manufacturer as "Civval", as well the inspector code "243" over a "broad arrow" flanked by the initials "W D", over the initial "P" for the Pimlico depot. The cap shows interior wear and soiling, with a few minute holes to the rear of the exterior crown and minor exterior soiling. The metal insignia shows minor tarnishing, with some verdigris to the vent rivets, else very good. This regiment participated in numerous notable battles on the Western Front, including Neuve Chapelle, Ypres, Loos, the Marne, Guillemont, Messines, St. Quentin, and others. They also saw heavy action at Gallipoli and in Mesopotamia.
