Description:

MAMIE DOUD EISENHOWER
(1896-1979) First Lady, wife of Dwight D. Eisenhower, 34th President of the United States. Good content T.L.S. on White House letterhead, 1p. 8vo., Denver, Sep. 28, 1955, to Louise Caffey. In part: "Dear Louise, It was so thoughtful of you to write, and your letter meant a great deal to me. I am out here in the hospital where they are not only taking care of Ike, but me, too. Each hour that passes with good news lightens the burden. It was all so sudden and came as such a shock. John [Eisenhower, the President''s son] and I were permitted to have lunch with Ike today. It is wonderful having John here - he is such a morale booster for Ike, Nana and me..." Mamie boldly signs in black ink at the conclusion. Four days prior to this letter, on September 24, President Eisenhower suffered a serious heart attack while playing golf in Denver, requiring six weeks'' hospitalization. He would suffer a total of seven heart attacks before his death in 1969, but nevertheless was able to run for a second term and win by a landslide in 1956. The letter bears original folds, else very good. Includes original transmittal envelope.
