Description:

CALEB VANCE HAYNES (1895-1966) U.S. Air Force major general and one of the most important and talented military aviators and commanders of World War II. Haynes organized the Assam-Burma-China Ferry Command and evacuated Burma with the Chinese and RAF. He then went to China to organize and command the Bomber Command of the China Air Task Force under Gen. Claire Chennault. He later returned to India to organize the India Air Task Force of the 10th Air Force. Important set of three Pilot's Log Books maintained by Caleb Vance Haynes from June, 1918 to January, 1934. The log books, numbered "1" to "3" each bear Haynes' name on the cover and signatures within, are comprised of about 200pp. 12mo. each with cloth boards. The first entry is on June 14, 1918 in Tours, France while serving the Army as a test pilot. These early flights are fascinating, including "spiralsacrobaticsstunt formation flyingcross country" in a huge variety of aircraft, including the Spad, Sopwith Camel, Nieuport, Moraine Parasol, Salmson, Fokker, FE2B Pusher, etc. He returned to the U.S. and undertook hundreds of training flights with students (including "Sgt. Klutz") which continue in the second log. The second log also shows additional training in night flying, radio flying, photography and gun cameras, test flights, etc. The third log shows yet more training and testing, ferrying flights, long distance flights, etc., most originating from Washington and Alabama. The latter part of the third log records hours flown without details. Over the period of the three logs, Haynes accumulated 3,470 hours of flying time! Very good.
