MAJOR ERASMUS C. GILBREATH PRESIDENTIAL APPOINTMENTS GROUPING (10)
ERASMUS C. GILBREATH (1840–1898) Major in the United States Army who began his 37-year career as an organizer and first lieutenant of the 20th Indiana Volunteers. Gilbreath was involved in numerous major battles during the Civil War, including Marye's Heights at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, where the regiment captured nearly the entirety of the 23rd George Volunteers, and Gettysburg, where the regiment fought at the Peach Orchard. He bore witness to the battle between the CSS Virginia and the USS Monitor, and also served during the Indian Wars, in which he helped establish Fort Custer, and in the Spanish–American War. Good grouping of ten documents, including four presidential appointments, includes: ANDREW JOHNSON, partly-printed D.S. as president, 1p. folio, Washington, Apr. 21, 1865, his appointment of Gilbreath to serve as Assistant Quartermaster with the rank of Captain in the Regular Army, co-signed by Secretary of War EDWIN M. STANTON; with ANDREW JOHNSON, partly-printed D.S. with a hand-stamped signature as president, 1p. folio, Washington, May 19, 1866, appointment of Gilbreath to the rank of 'First Lieutenant in the Fifteenth Regiment of Infantry', co-signed by Secretary of War EDWIN M. STANTON also with facsimile signature; with ANDREW JOHNSON, partly-printed D.S. with a hand-stamped signature as president, 1p. folio, Washington, Apr. 11, 1867, appointment of Gilbreath to the rank of 'First Lieutenant in the Twenty-fourth Regiment of Infantry', co-signed by Secretary of War EDWIN M. STANTON, also with facsimile signature; with ANDREW JOHNSON, partly-printed D.S. with a hand-stamped signature as president, 1p. folio, Washington, Ma4. 31, 1866, appointment of Gilbreath to the rank of 'Second Lieutenant in the Fifteenth Regiment of Infantry', co-signed by Secretary of War EDWIN M. STANTON. also with facsimile signature; with WILLIAM MCKINLEY partly-printed D.S. as president, 1p. folio, Washington, May 17, 1897, appointment of Gilbreath to the rank of 'Major of Infantry', co-signed by Secretary of War RUSSELL A. ALGER; with Governor of Indiana OLIVER P. MORTON war-date D.S., 1p. sm. folio, Indianapolis, June 6, 1863, Gilbreath's appointment as Major of the 20th Indiana Vols.; with A.A.G. EDWARD D. TOWNSEND L.S., 1p. 4to., War Dept., Washington, Feb. 4, 1865, an approval of Gilbreath's application for promotion to lieutenant colonel; with Gilbreath's July 28, 1865 muster-out notice and his Apr. 24, 1866 wedding certificate. Some of the smaller documents are soiled with some splits, still overall very good.
