Description:

(Maines Slavery Protest) Rare D.S. 2pp. 4to., Portland, Me., Feb. 26 1824, signed by Governor Albion Parris 1788-1857 and sent to the Governor of Pennsylvania. In 1824, Georgia attempted an end run amendment to the Constitution reading: That no part of the Constitution of the United States ought to be construed, or shall be construed to authorize the importation or ingress of any person of color into any one of the United States, contrary to the laws of such state . Such an amendment would have effectively prevented the federal government from enforcing any slave law, and handed the issue of slave importation back to each individual state. Northern state governments resented the attempt, and here Parris forwards Maine's resolution that the amendment is hereby disapproved by the Legislature of this State. And the Governor is hereby requested to transmit a copy of the foregoing Resolution to the Executive of each of the United States. Folds starting, otherwise very good. E11000-1500
