Description:

Very rare original Second Model 1-0 vest worn by a member of the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam - Studies and Observation Group (MACV-SOG) during the Vietnam War. The vest is constructed of olive-drab canvas, with six total front pockets, four with snap closures and two zippered. Two small flap-covered pockets are located at the rear hip area, with an additional zippered opening allowing access to a large internal rear pocket. Two size adjustment straps are located at the waist. The interior is fitted with two additional zippered pockets, with a third patch pocket on the left-hand side. The vest is closed with a zipper at front, as well as three grey leather tabs fitted with snaps. The vest shows no maker or inspection markings, and aside from some wear to the snaps and some oxidation to the strap buckles, is in very good to fine condition. These vests were manufactured by the CIA for issue to MACV-SOG team leaders engaged in operations over the Vietnamese border into North Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. This example was worn by Frederick "Rick" Howard of MACV-SOG Recon Team New Jersey, based at Forward Operational Base #1 at Phu Bai in 1968. A replica dog tag bearing Howard's name and assignment is attached to the vest's front zipper, and a 2013 photo showing Howard holding the vest presented here is also present, along with a period photo of Howard in-country. Ex. Jason M. Hardy, sold with his letter of authenticity.
