Description:

DOUGLAS MACARTHUR (1880 - 1964) American general and Allied Supreme Commander in the Pacific in World War II, accepted the surrender of Japan and was later dismissed by Truman for advocating an invasion of China. Excessively rare, superb content A.L.S. "MacArthur ", being a holograph pencil telegram draft, 1p. 4to., [n.p., n.d. but known to have been transmitted by telegraph on May 2, 1947], with fine content about Jewish soldiers, in part: "...I am glad to send the following message in compliance with your letter of April 15. 'Great numbers of the men of Jewish faith whose immortal memory you commemorate today served under my command. The dignity of their birth blood belongs to their loved ones alone but the sanctity of their death has become out own hallowed heritage. They died unquestioning, uncomplaining, with faith in their hearts and on their lips the hope for victory and peace. No words can express my reverent homage and my prayer. We will not fail them... ". This letter is unusual insofar as MacArthur usually dictated his telegrams to his aide. Fine. $5,000-6,000
