Description:

A piece of World War II headgear with an interesting association, a U.S. M1917AI "Kelly" helmet, the exterior featuring a very rough cork texture. The interior is fitted with a light-brown leather four-fingered liner, with a leather pad within the crown. A taupe webbing chin strap featuring anodized brass fittings is affixed to the liner. The interior of the rear rim is heat-stamped "ZA196". One finger of the liner bears the black ink inscription: "This helmet worn by Dave E. Satterfield Jr. in London England & Ireland & Scotland, October & November 1941, on a Mission for the U.S. Navy as Lt Comm USNR". The liner shows minor wear, with slight oxidation to the underside of the rim, else very good. DAVE E. SATTERFIELD, JR. (1894-1946) represented Virginia in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1937 to 1945. During his visit to England, he was attached to the staff of Rear Admiral Robert L. Ghormley, chief of the special naval mission to the United States Embassy in London. Included with the helmet is December, 1941 edition of the University of Richmond's "Alumni Bulletin" magazine, featuring a photo of Satterfield on the cover and reprinting a letter sent by him describing his experiences in England, in small part: "...Guy Hope, whom you will remember, is a Naval Reserve Officer and is attached to the embassy here. He met me at the Paddington Station, Saturday night, and in the dark, amid thousands of people, found me... We went immediately to the Dorchester Hotel and 15 minutes after I had gotten to my room, the first air raid warning since July was sounded. Poor Guy, who had not heard one before, was at a loss as to what to do with me. Happily, there were no bombs dropped, but I did learn that some German planes were knocked down by the British..."
