Description:

M1915 MOUNTED DISPATCH RIDER'S PICKELHAUBE HELMET
A very attractive, uncommon World War I-era Imperial German ‘pickelhaube' helmet for ‘Jaeger zu Pferde', or mounted dispatch riders. The helmet is constructed of brightly-polished steel, constructed in three pieces with a separately-applied visor and ‘lobster tail' rear apron. A gray metal ‘wappen' front plate is fitted at the front, in the form of a crowned eagle clutching a sword and scepter, with a banner across its chest emblazoned with the motto ‘MIT GOTT FUR KOENIG UND VATERLAND' (‘With God for King and Fatherland'). A gray metal bayonet-style mount with four radiating ‘petals' is fitted at the crown, on which is installed a standard-issue M1915 pickelhaube spike. An M1915 black leather strap is attached over the front visor, with stamped and painted cockades installed over each strap lug. The interior of the helmet is finished in black, but for the front visor, which is green. It features a black-dyed brown leather liner with eleven ‘fingers'. The maker's mark ‘Otto Nachtigall Berlin 1915' is stamped around the socket of the spike mount inside the crown. The exterior shows some oxidation freckling throughout, with much larger patches of oxidation to the front visor. The liner shows tears to several fingers and the adjustment lace is absent. The chinstrap is somewhat mummified, with the adjustment buckles and lug loops showing oxidation. Still in very good condition overall.
