M.O.H. RECIPIENT HENRY C. MEYER
(1844 - 1935) Union officer of the 24th N.Y Cavalry, fought at Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg and in the Wilderness; he was promoted successively to the posts of second lieutenant and captain, finally being brevetted major. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism at Petersburh on June 17, 1864, the citation reading: 'During an assault and in the face of a heavy fire rendered heroic assistance to a wounded and helpless officer, thereby saving his life and in the performance of this gallant act sustained a severe wound.' Lot of four A.Ls.S. 18pp. total, 8vo., Jan. 15 - Apr. 2, 1864 to HIRAM PAULDING, JR., son of HIRAM PAULDING (1797-1878), a Union rear admiral. Meyer speaks of girlfriends, seeking a promotion, his transfer to the 24th N.Y Cavalry, the shipment of the body of a comrade home, etc. Very good.
