Description:

M-1 CARBINE BY IBM
An excellent war-date M1 carbine .30 cal. semi-automatic rifle, 18 in. barrel, 36 in. overall, manufactured by IBM. M1 carbines produced by IBM were manufactured at Plant Number 4 in Poughkeepsie NY, with some additional parts being produced at a company facility in Endicott NY, as well as other locations for sub-contracted smaller parts. Identifiable as being made for IBM and indicated by the addition of the IBM mark with a 'B' added to the original sub-contractor's markings. Because of this, it is common for IBM manufactured carbines to have mixed contractor parts in their original issued format. This classic weapon shows some, but not all, typical features of a semi-early production gun: a push-button safety, a two-position flip down L-type rear sight (in this case marked 'FO B'), and a Type II ejector with plain face. However, this gun features a round bolt that is blued, and a 'low wood' Type III stock exposing the operating handle. The top fore area of the receiver over the chamber is marked 'U.S. CARBINE CAL. 30 M1', and to the top of the receiver at the rear, 'I.B.M. CORP.', showing serial number '3950712' indicating manufacture between March and May of 1944. The barrel is also marked with 'I.B.M. CORP.' in one line to the top of the barrel with no date, indicating a barrel produced in 1944 or later, with the barrel properly lacking a bayonet lug. Front sight retaining 99% bluing with virtually no loss at all, it being marked 'SI B'. Rifle holds 98% of the original parkerized finish overall. Showing some minor loss of bluing to the top of the bolt body from the action being hand-cycled, also some very minor loss to the parkerized finish on the bolt handle from same. The multi-piece stamped trigger housing is marked 'B-BE', and the hammer is marked 'WMB', with a push button safety marked 'EP B', indicating it is made by the Eastern Pond Company: all these parts are proper to an original format IBM carbine This early Type III stock is produced of unvarnished walnut, featuring the usual oval-cut sling hole, and the bottom of the grip is marked with an 'H' stamp, indicating that the weapon has passed inspection. The interior of the sling pocket on the left-hand side of the stock is marked with 'LW B' indicating manufacture by Lumb Woodworking Co., also in Poughkeepsie NY, with the right-hand side of the butt being marked with the crossed cannons cartouche, both indicating this stock was produced for an IBM manufactured gun. Stock features a stamped steel butt plate, and both stock and hand guard are in very good condition, showing three light scrape line impressions and three small dings in the wood, but with no of loss to the finish, all to the left-hand side. Overall, fine showing nice original dark oil finish to a medium walnut color. Offered WITH: World War II-era 15-round magazine in blued finish, marked 'LU' with a flat bottom floor and period rubber protector, a khaki stock magazine pouch marked 'UPDIKE AWNING CO. 1943', containing two spare magazines still wrapped and untouched in original cosmoline wax paper, and an original olive drab sling held in place with a period original oiler. A textbook example of the M1 Carbine from a rarer, more desirable maker of this classic gun. Excellent condition with no evidence of it ever being rebuilt or restored.
