Description:

LYNN ST. JOHN AND THE BUSINESS OF COLLEGE BASEBALL
LYNN ST. JOHN (1876 - 1950) Basketball coach and later Director of Athletics at Ohio State, sat on the Rules Committee with James Naismith, inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. A fine archive of material documenting negotiations undertaken between Ohio State and other colleges in arranging baseball games, includes four contracts signed by St. John, each 1p. 4to., 1914-35, the most interesting clause in each showing that the visiting manager would be paid up to $4,000 or a percentage of the gate. We suppose this was done in order to offset travelling costs. Also present are about 19 letters and contracts signed by coaches of other colleges, all sent to St. John ca. 1914-18, all discussing fees to be paid for their attendance, scheduling, etc. Colleges include Otterbein, Muskingum, Chattanooga, Georgetown, Marietta, Ohio Northern, West Virginia University, etc., along with two solicitation letters from umpire C. G. "Ginger" Wainwright and a bat manufacturer. Very good. Great insight into the negotiations undertaken to have teams compete before college sports became big business.
