LYNETTE 'SQUEAKY' FROMME
(b. 1948) ‘Squeaky', follower of Charles Manson, later attempted to assassinate President Gerald Ford, failing to get a shot off when her gun jammed. A.L.S. ‘Red', 14pp. 4to., Alderson, WV, Mar. 5, 1980, to Nuel Melton, Charles Manson's biographer. In part: ‘…Ideally…in this country the best of many worlds. You could go from the mountains and country life to cities rich with cultural spots, fine careful architecture, wide quiet places to walk and trade goods, real interesting places to hear music and eat the best foods prepared in the interest of health and enjoyment…I know that those nice people at the cancer society who ask for donations are feeding the same machine that chucks out lethal portions of poison chemicals through the back doors of the giant companies into the water that I have to drink. I can smell the tongues of the politicians through their polished teeth even from the T.V. set. And when my face reflects that repulsive reality, there is always a psychiatrist, teacher, D.A., preacher or warden to say that I'm hateful…I want to start over with no George Washington lies. I want my children to walk their own steps and feel their own feelings – not because they are expected to say ‘I love you' but because they love the life they are. And I would NOT put them in jails and prisons because they do what they are shown or because they can…I also know what is necessary to sustain if Manson is like buried gold. There is all kinds of light in that mind of minds. I used to laugh at others programmed opinions of him before I realized they were killing us along with themselves. When I say 'they' I really mean a rancid part of the human condition. Back to your letter - yes I do want copies of the article. The reason I am in this new unit: (18 mos. stretch first sentence and then I get out only if they want to let me). They in this case is the bureau of prisons (Norman Carlson) and the warden here (Ken Neagle) and I think few if any others besides 1 person who know the family of the girl I hit w/ a hammer. The main thing I pick up is that the Bureau was embarrassed & they fear I will further embarrass them. I didn't call the newspapers or hit that woman for publicity. I've been punished a year come March 8th for this and that's not standard. Far from it. The girl I hit was never unconscious, spent two days in the hospital. And I'm bad because I won't say I'm sorry because that'd be a lie. It's a long story. That's why none of 'them' really know it. In short, I felt that I could not walk around the aggravation anymore. She is in for a 'sky jacking' to free her Croats from domination by Serbs in Yugoslavia - at least that's what she told me. That the Serbs hold the majority of the jobs she was very snobby when I first talked to her & I was decent towards her and truthful. Later I found out she had a little love thing going w/ a counselor...That is just one incident among many...He said that he could not justify me having calls w/ Charlie. He was new to Pleasanton. I went to see him & had a long personal talk w/ him explaining that the newspapers have made up stories about us and that the T.V. account of Manson & family activity was only peripherally true - 95% lie…' Fine. With the original transmittal cover and a photograph of Fromme with SANDRA GOOD. The woman Fromme attacked with a hammer was JULIENNE BUSIC (b. 1948) American writer, activist, and the widow and co-conspirator of Zvonko Busic. She was arrested with Busic in 1976 after hijacking TWA Flight 355 and sentenced to life in prison, with early parole.
