Description:

LYNDON B. JOHNSON
(1908 - 1973) Thirty-sixth President of the United States and creator of the "Great Society" social welfare programs. America's growing involvement in Vietnam led to his declining a re-nomination as president. T.L.S. "Lyndon" as Senator on Senate letterhead, 1p. 4to., Washington, Apr. 9, 1954, to Truman Bradshaw of Galveston, TX, regarding a personal appeal case. In part: "...Naturally, you and your brother were disappointed when the Board acted adversely on his appeal. I was pleased to do what I could to see that your brother had every opportunity to present his case and that it was fully considered by the members of the Board. There would be no point in attempting to have the case reopened, unless your brother is in position to offer new and pertinent evidence...". Light rusted paper clip impression at top margin, else very good. With secretarially-signed T.L.S. to the same correspondent, Oct. 30, 1953, sending thanks for "...your wonderful letter. I was glad to have the snapshots of you and Arthur Perry [Johnson's assistant]...". Five-line pencil docket at bottom, very good. Also included is a T.L.S. of Perry, thanking the correspondent for his words about Senator Johnson. Three pieces.
