Description:

LYNDON B. JOHNSON
(1908-1973) Thirty-sixth President of the United States and creator of the ‘Great Society' social welfare programs. America's growing involvement in Vietnam led to his declining a renomination as president. Fine content T.L.S. as President on White House letterhead, 1p. 8vo., Washington, June 3, 1968, to Senator David H. Pryor, in part: ‘…On Monday it was the proud privilege of this Government to sign the Non-Proliferation Treaty. We will begin talks with the Soviet Union on further peace talks soon. Because of the great importance of these events to all people of the world, I am sending you a personal copy of the remarks I made on Monday [not included].…I trust we may move forward as a united people toward bringing a measure of order into the affairs of our troubled planet…'. Pryor (b. 1934) was senator before becoming governor of Arkansas. Opened for signing in 1968, the NPT entered into force in 1970 and, in 1995, was extended indefinitely. Despite the fact that it did not succeed in containing the spread of nuclear proliferation, it marked a major success for advocates of global arms control. Fine.
