Description:

(1908-1973) Thirty-sixth President of the United States and creator of the "Great Society" social welfare programs. America's growing involvement in Vietnam led to his declining a renomination as president. Good content T.L.S. as Vice President on official letterhead, 1p. 8vo., Washington, D.C., Sep. 21, 1961, to Bishop Nolan B. Harmon. In full: "I certainly agree with you as to the absolute necessity of standing firm on the issue of a successor to [United Nations Secretary General] Dag Hammarskjold. As you know, the United States is pursuing this matter with vigor. His death was tragic to the whole free world and to mankind everywhere." Johnson signs in black ink at the conclusion. Shows an original mailing fold and tape residue at the to edge, else very good. Hammarskjold was killed in a plane crash on September 18, 1961, en route to negotiate a cease fire between UN forces and Katangese separatists in the Congo. He was succeeded by U Thant.
