Description:

LYNDON B. JOHNSON
(1908-1973) Thirty-sixth President of the United States and creator of the "Great Society" social welfare programs. America's growing involvement in Vietnam led to his declining a renomination as president. Fine content T.L.S., 1p. 8vo., Washington, D.C., April 2, 1968, two days following his "Withdrawal Speech" in which, after forty minutes of discussion on U.S. policy on Vietnam, he announced his intention to not seek re-election. Johnson writes to San Francisco businessman and close friend Cyril Mangin, in part: "...I am deeply grateful that this nation can draw strength from your own example. It is the compassion and courage of the American character that must unite our people now in good faith and great purpose. Your understanding gives me every cause to hope that my personal decision will inspire a public resolve to combine in the work of peace and freedom. There is not higher interest for any American at this critical hour. I am proud to pursue it with you..." He signs at the conclusion in black ink. Shows an original mailing fold, else very good to fine.
