Description:

(1908-1973) Thirty-sixth President of the United States and creator of the "Great Society" social welfare programs. America's growing involvement in Vietnam led to his declining a renomination as president. Fine rare association color I.S.P. as President, 10 ¼" x 13" (sight), showing Johnson seated in the Oval Office with his hands clasped before him. He inscribed the photo: "To Arthur Goldberg Lawyer, administrator and jurist of the highest excellence. Lyndon B. Johnson". ARTHUR J. GOLDBERG (1908 - 1990) was an American statesman and jurist who served as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, Secretary of Labor, and Ambassador to the United Nations. Goldberg's most influential move on the Court involved the death penalty. He argued in a 1963 internal Supreme Court memorandum that imposition of the death penalty was condemned by the international community and should be regarded as "cruel and unusual punishment," a phrase used to this day by death penalty opponents. During his tenure on the Supreme Court, future associate justice Stephen Breyer and criminal law professor Alan Dershowitz served as his clerks.
