Description:

LYNDON B. JOHNSON
(1908-1973) Thirty-sixth President of the United States and creator of the 'Great Society' social welfare programs. America's growing involvement in Vietnam led to his declining a renomination as president. Great content T.L.S. 'Lyndon' on U.S. Senate letterhead, 2pp. 4to., U.S. Courthouse, Austin, TX, September 18, 1952, a bitter and defensive letter sent to his friend Maury Maverick regarding allegations of inappropriate contact made by Johnson towards Maverick's clients. In part: '...I know nothing about any ultimatum that you or anyone else has given me...I never in my life put my arm around anyone in preference to you, and if you have ever had a problem that I can help on politically or otherwise...I have always been on your side. If I was ever 'intentionally offensive' to any of your clients, I was unmindful of it. The same answer goes for my 'mortally offending a mutual friend.' Every few weeks I get a whole sack of rumors about what I have done against you, Maury, Jr., or someone else...they are just as familiar to me as calculus... If you and Terrell and Maury, Jr., or any of the Maverick clan or followers don't know I am your friend by this time, there ain't no use of my spending any more time reassuring you...I will talk to you at any time, any place, that you want to talk...' Staple holes, else fine. Of course, Johnson's rather abrasive political and personal demeanor was not a secret to any of those who dealt with him professionally. Maverick, from an entrenched Texas political family, spent six years in the Texas House of Representatives, and ran for the Senate when Lyndon Johnson became vice president. The two remained friends despite occasional flare-ups, as evidenced here.
