Description:

Good presentation photo album, 42pp. folio, containing 42 original b/w and color photographs in plastic sleeves, each 11" x 14", taken during President Lyndon B. Johnson’s first around-the-world trip, Dec. 19-24, 1967. The album opens with a color map of the world, illustrating the president’s route and his stops along the way. The photographs go on to depict Johnson’s stops in California, Hawaii, Pago Pago, Australia, Vietnam, Thailand, Pakistan, Italy and the Azores. He is shown meeting with world leaders including Prime Minister John McEwan of Australia, President Park Chung-hee of South Korea, Prime Minister Thanom Kittikachorn of Thailand, President Nguyen Van Thieu of South Vietnam, President Ferdinand Marcos of the Philippines, Prime Minister Harold Wilson of Great Britain, Pope Paul VI, and numerous others. A series of five images shows Johnson attending the state memorial service of Australian Prime Minister Harold Holt, who had disappeared while swimming and was presumed drowned. Most interestingly, a series of three b/w images show Johnson meeting with U.S. aviators and Khorat Air Force Base in Thailand to discuss the air war over Vietnam, while six further color images show him addressing troops, awarding medals, meeting wounded soldiers and conferring with General William Westmoreland at Cam Ranh Bay in Vietnam. Each photograph bears an alphanumeric backstamp. The identity of the photographer is not known, although it is most likely that the images were captured by Johnson’s personal photographer, Yoichi Okamoto. The cover bears the gilt inscription "To Cy Rennie from LBJ"; while we cannot verify the identity of this individual, it is believed that he was a member of the White House Press Corps who was unable to accompany the president on this trip due to illness. Both covers are detached, as is the first page, else very good.
