LUTHER STEPHENSON
(1830-1921) Union brigadier general, seriously wounded in action at Gettysburg being shot through the face, and again twice in the Overland Campaign in May and June of 1864. War-date A.L.S. while in command of the 32nd Mass. Vols., 1p. 8vo., ‘Camp at 32nd Mass.', June 22, 1864. To Capt. J. C. Fuller, in part: ‘…I cheerfully comply with your request and can conscientiously give you my testimony as to your ability as an officer. During your connection with this Regiment you have displayed great efficiency in the duties you have been called upon to perform and your company in my estimation is one of the best disciplined in the command. It came under your charge in bad condition and under your command has steadily improved…You are at liberty to use this note as you may deem advisable…'. A bit rough at left margin, else very good. Offered with a 5pp. 4to. manuscript copies of letters from generals being sent to the Governor of Massachusetts and who, like Stephenson, rave about Captain Fuller. Neatly tied together at top with ribbon and very good. Two pieces.
