Description:

(1748 - 1826) American lawyer and patriot, Martin was a member of the Continental Congress and Constitutional Convention. He opposed a strong central government and the adoption of the Constitution, and later defended Burr in his trial for treason. A.L.S., 1p. 4to., Annapolis, June 30, 1810, a letter from an aggrieved Martin regarding an unnamed defendant who refuses to pay for Martin's counsel. In part: '...I wrote a line to yourself and W. Thompson some weeks past relative to the case now in the court of appeals between Mr. Bowleys - and Lamott which must be argued in the approaching week - Letter was recorded. I expected before this time an answer. I mentioned in that letter my expectation of recovering from Mr. B. before - one hundred dollars as a certain for my services...obliged to be absent from Baltimore I can neither support my family there nor myself here...If Mr. Bowleys representatives do not confer on the property...let them inform me so, I shall give myself no farther trouble...'. Left edge reinforced on the verso, else fine condition. The beginning of the 1800s saw Martin as defense counsel in two controversial national cases. In the first case, Martin won an acquittal for his close friend Supreme Court Justice Samuel Chase in his impeachment trial in 1805. Two years later, Martin was one of Aaron Burr's defense lawyers when Burr stood trial for treason in 1807. Sold with a contemporary portrait.

International shipments are invoiced by DIMENSIONAL weight, not the item weight.
