Description:

LUFTWAFFE GENERAL OFFICER'S VISOR CAP
A very fine and attractive Luftwaffe general officer's visor cap, manufactured to an extremely high standard of quality, is constructed of grey-blue wool over a band of woven black mohair, with a black vulkanfiber visor with a green checked underside. The crown of the cap and the edges of the band are trimmed with gold bullion piping, with a heavy gold bullion double chin cord with adjustment knots secured over the visor with a gold-finished pebbled button on each side. The peak of the cap displays a gold bullion Luftwaffe eagle on a blue-grey wool ground, over a large bullion cockade and winged wreath on a black wool ground, both insignia blind-stitched to the body of the cap. The interior of the cap is lined with pale gold silk, and features an unmarked buff-colored leather sweatband. The inside crown displays the printed metallic label of the maker, Erel, identifying the model: ‘Offizier Kliederklasse Extra', with an ‘Erel Sonderklasse' diamond label. The label is protected by a plastic diamond sweat shield. The top of the visor shows a small brown stain, with a moth nip visible under the left wing of the eagle insignia, and with minor tarnish to the bullion throughout and sweat stains commensurate with use and wear to the interior lining and sweatband. Nevertheless, the cap remains in outstanding condition. It is accompanied by a signed and notarized letter from collector and dealer Charles E. Snyder, Jr. attributing the cap presented here to Luftwaffe fighter ace and Generalleutnant ADOLF GALLAND (1912-1996) and stating that it was given to Snyder by Galland during one of Snyder's many visits to Galland's home in Germany prior to his death. The cap was later purchased directly from Snyder by our consignor. As we are unable to independently verify this attribution, the cap is offered and estimated as is.
