Description:

LUFTWAFFE FLIGHT SUIT FROM CAPTURED GERMAN BOMBER CREWMAN
A World War II relic with an intriguing past, a Luftwaffe flight suit (fligerkombi) allegedly taken from a German airman show down over England during the Battle of Britain. There are numerous repairs and the inner wind-proof sheathing is shredded as the suit was used as a work suit by a farmer for some time after war's end. The abdomen and lower-left sleeve show tears consistent with shrapnel which jibes with the description of the item when previously sold. All zippers are present, with leather pull tabs. The original owner stated that the suit was purchased from a man in Ipswich, and that the plane was shot down in Suffolk in 1940. As it turns out, the only German aircraft lost in Ipswich in 1940 was a Dornier D.17Z shot down by R.A.F. Flight Lt. P. S. Weaver and F/O R. E. P. Booker of 56 Squadron on Aug. 21, 1940. Four men were captured. From the personal collection of World War II and Civil War historian Michael Miner. Miner's thirty-year collection was built through an extensive system of contacts he developed with artifact hunters and diggers in Europe and the Far East, and he maintained careful records of the items he amassed.
