Description:

LUFTFLOTTE 5 PHOTO ALBUM PRESENTED TO HERMANN GOERING FROM HANS-JUERGEN STUMPFF
An extraordinary presentation album given by the commander of powerful Luftwaffe air wing Luftflotte 5 of Denmark, Finland and Norway to Hermann Goring. The album consists of 114 pages, with 121 photographs, 23 hand colored drawings and text in calligraphy, all bound in 13 1/2" x 12 1/4" leather album. This presentation was prepared for HERMANN GORING by HANS-JURGEN STUMPF (1889-1968). Stumpf served as a General of the Luftwaffe, first as its chief of staff from 1 June 1937 until 1 January 1939, and until the end of 1943 he commanded Luftflotte 5, engaged in the Battle of Britain and operating out of Norway against Scotland and Northern England. Stumpf dedicates this fine relic on the first page: "To commander-in-chief the Reichsmarshall of the greater German Reich, Hermann Goering. The Luftflotte 5 in Norway/Finland. May 1943 Stumpff Generaloberst." Illustrations and photographs, all full-page, include line drawings and aerial and ground images of the nine German bases in the region which all appear in snowy settings. Other aspects of life on the bases are also illustrated, including defensive works, heating plants, kitchens, construction, road and water transport, radio operations, air routes, medical facilities, etc. Also shown are aerial views of Russian cities within reach of Germany's aircraft, including Murmansk, Archangel, Kirowsk, and other key locations, some while under attack, and Allied vessels sunk by German aerial attacks. Covers worn and broken at edges, spine cover coming loose, contents are fine. An incredible, important grouping which certainly pleased Goring following the failure of the Blitz. Two years later, Stumpff would become one of the signatories to Germany's unconditional surrender.
