Description:

(1897 - 1978) American army general and Governor of the American Zone of occupied Germany who devised the Berlin Airlift to relieve the beseiged city. Fine association A.L.S. "Lucius" as C-in-C, European Command, 1p. 12mo., Berlin, Mar. 8 [1949] in pencil to his chief of staff CLARENCE R. HUEBNER (1888-1972), American major general who would command the 1st Infantry Division in its assault on Omaha Beach, in the drive across France, at the Hurtgen Forest and in the battle of Aachen. In part: "...This copy of Brad's [Gen. Omar Bradley] letter speaks for itself. I could add nothing as you know of the admiration and affection which I have for you and its growth with the years now of our association..." Clay's letter is stapled to a copy of the letter he refers to from Bradly, 1p. 4to., Mar. 1, 1949. In part: "...extremely gratifying to me to note the effectiveness with which you are employingthe limited manpower available. It is a comfort to know we are supported by...Huebner, Milburn, and White...We all recognize and appreciate [Huebner's] exceptional ability..." Also present is a copy of a letter from Secretary of Defense James Forrestal to Clay, 1p. 4to.,. Nov. 19, 1948: "...You have one of the most taxing and difficult jobs in our government. I am very proud of the way you are discharging your responsibility. I am deeply impressed with General Huebner..." File holes, else very good. Three pieces.
