Description:

LUCIUS CLAY (1897 - 1978) American army general and Governor of the American Zone of occupied Germany who devised the Berlin Airlift to relieve the besieged city. Good content T.L.S. on his official letterhead, 1p. 4to., Berlin, May 10, 1948 to HARRY WOODRING, Secretary of War in Franklin D. Roosevelt's administration from 1936 to 1940. Clay thanks Woodring for his letter which "explained many things". He adds: "...Berlin is tense these days but not yet crucial However, it makes it much less difficult feeling support and confidence like you have shown at home. I shall be ever proud and thankful..." Near fine. Things were just "ramping-up" for Clay. On Mar. 25, 1948, the Soviets had issued orders restricting Western military and passenger traffic between the American, British and French occupation zones and Berlin. The announcement of the issuance of a "new" Deutschmark to be used in the Western sectors prompted a complete Russian blockade of those parts of the city just weeks after Clay signed this letter.
