Description:

LUCIEN JONAS "THE SOUL OF FRANCE" PHOTOGRAVURE PORTFOLIO
Fine set of twelve photogravure illustrations, each 15" x 20 1/2" with rough-cut edges, produced by French artist LUCIEN JONAS (1880-1947) and published in 1918 by Brown, Robertson Co. of New York, and released under the title "The Soul of France". Each image depicts a scene demonstrating the resilience and fortitude of French soldiers and civilians in the face of German attacks and insults. Subjects depicted include Germans interrogating a wounded French soldier, a priest bearing his chest to a German soldier before a firing squad, a nun tending for a wounded soldier, a blinded chaplain being gu9ided by a paralyzed soldier on piggyback, civilians glowering at passing German officers, a father and his children discovering their slain mother, and more. Each print is titled in pencil at bottom left, and bears the publishing information above the image at upper right, with proper paper watermarks visible with backlight. The set is housed in a grey paperboard portfolio bearing a title label in English on the front cover, very good overall.
