Description:

LOYALIST CLAIMS IN AMERICA
WILLIAM MOORE SMITH (1759-1821) Philadelphia lawyer and poet engaged in 1800 to settle British claims in America as per the terms of Jay's Treaty in 1794. Fine content A.L.S. "Wm Moore Smith" 2pp. 4to., "near Philadelphia", July 15, 1802, to Ward Chapman in St. John's, New Brunswick, concerning his plans for settling claims made by loyalists who fled America during the Revolution. In part: "...In consequence of instructions from his Majesty's Charge d'affaires, I have taken into my Care and possession all the Papers & Documents belonging to the British Claiments, which had been filed in the office of the Secretary to the late Board of Comr under the 6th Article of the Treaty of 1794...I am inclined to believe it will not be necessary for the Claimants to put themselves to much trouble about their papers, for it has been told me....that it will be necessary for me to go to England with all the Papers under my care...and have so arranged my own private Business as to leave to Country at very short notice...". Morris set off for London in 1803 to settle the claims, returning to Philadelphia the following year. He spent the remainder of his life in scholarly pursuits. Usual folds, light mounting traces at left margin, overall very good condition.
