Description:

LOW DOG, LITTLE BIG HORN VETERAN
Extremely rare D.F. Barry cabinet card of Low Dog, one of the most important Lakota leaders at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Low Dog led a decisive charge that broke the resistance of the 7th Cavalry on Calhoun Hill. The common image of Low Dog is the seated portrait that is variously attributed to both D.F. Barry and his mentor, O.S. Goff. This pose, photographed by D.F. Barry, is rarely seen. Adding to the historical significance of this cabinet card is that it came from the collection of the famed historian Col. A.B. Welch, who conducted much valuable research among the veterans of the Little Bighorn. The albumen is in excellent condition and boasts beautiful tones. Labeling in Welch's hand; Welch wrote Low Dog's name in Lakota and after first designating him as Hunkpapa and then Yankton, settled on Oglala! Bearing Barry's Bismarck, Dakota Territory backstamp. Tiny tack holes appear at extreme top and bottom margins, with a few mounting traces on verso easily removed. A most difficult Barry image to obtain, especially in such fine condition.
