Description:

(1775 – 1852) First Lady of the United States from 1825 to 1829 during the presidency of her husband, John Quincy Adams. Born in London, she was the first First Lady to be born outside the United States or the preceding Thirteen Colonies. Good content A.L.S. 'L. C. Adams', 1p. 4to., Washington, November 22, 1835 to an artist about a miniature portrait she has commissioned to be made for her daughter. In full: 'I am requested by my daughter again to trouble you, my dear Sir to complete the commission with which I have already burthen it you; by soliciting you to have the miniature which you have so kindly undertaken to procure for her sent to a jewellers [sic] and set in gold, in the form of a watch case to open with a spring, the face and back being in the mode now fashionable for what are styled hunting watches. The miniature within, of course, protected by a chrystal [sic] to prevent injury when the case is opened. I really feel almost ashamed to tax your politeness so severely; but the great kindness evinced by you in our short but pleasant intercourse in Massachusetts has induced the liberties now taken, and must plead my excuse. You will kindly send on the pictures when finished, with the different accounts; which shall immediately be attended to; and accept the united thanks of myself and daughter, with the offer of our grateful esteem. Respectfully, L.C. Adams.' Louisa Catherine and John Quincy Adams had only one daughter, who died at the age of one month. Mrs. Adams most likely refers to her daughter-in-law, Abigail Brown Brooks, who married her son Charles Francis Adams in 1829. Slightly faded, with a few small ink smudges at margins, else very good.
