LOUIS XVIII
(1755-1824) King of France in the restoration of the Bourbons following the fall and exile of Napoleon. Fine association D.S., 1p. folio parchment, Paris, July 5, 1814, naming Contre-Admiral Jacques Bedout to the Military Order of Saint-Louis. Signed by Louis at bottom. Heavy folds, with a 1 in. fold tear along the central vertical near the bottom, else very good. JAQUES BEDOUT (1751-1818) was a Canadian-born French naval officer who had both a merchant marine and Royal Navy career in France. Bedout spent 14 years in the merchant marine at the beginning of his career. He moved to France and joined the French Royal Navy in 1777 as temporary sub-lieutenant and rear admiral. He earned a reputation for bravery and excellence in naval maneuvers during the time of the American Revolution in which he fought alongside the Americans. In 1795, he commanded the 74-gun Tigre at the Battle of Groix. Bedout sustained four injuries, and was taken prisoner after the capture of Tigre. In 1802, Napoleon personally gave him a five ship squadron.
