Fine association A.Q.S., 1p. 12mo., [n.p.], Feb. 7, 1885 in French, a homage to author Victor Hugo in the year of Hugo's death. In full: "'The sublime child', as named by Chateaubriand, has merited the appellation 'the sublime oldster'. Before such glorious longevity France offers a beautiful spectacle. Its acclamation is a cry of patriotism. L. Pasteur". Light toning, else near fine, nicely double-matted and framed in wood. Victor Hugo's death on May 22, 1885 at the age of 83, generated intense national mourning. He was not only revered as a towering figure in French literature, but also internationally acknowledged as a statesman who had helped preserve and shape the Third Republic and democracy in France. Indeed, more than two million people joined his funeral procession in Paris.
