Description:

(1770 - 1823) French military commander and Marshal of the Empire who served during both the French Revolutionary Wars and the Napoleonic Wars. His talent for war, along with his reputation as a stern disciplinarian, earned him the nickname 'The Iron Marshal'. Fine content A.L.S., 4pp. 8vo., Strasbourg, Dec. 17, 1796, to an unknown general. Davout writes regarding war news and the death of Empress Catharine II of Russia. In part: '...The cannons, the bombs and the shellings never cease. The weather has been so perverse for the Austrians that it is reasonable to believe...we shall be able to hold Kehl for a long time...We still hold the bridgehead...It has not yet been attacked very vigorously...You know, no doubt, about the death of the Empress of Russia. This event could bring about a great change in the political system of Europe...' Fine condition. Catherine, who was shaken by the French Revolution, encouraged efforts against the young republic. Her death signaled a major shift in European politics, and a great advantage for the French.
