Description:

(1900 - 1979) British naval commander and statesman, supreme allied commander in Southeast Asia responsible for the recapture of Burma. Fine content T.L.S. 'Mountbatten of Burma' with holograph addition on his Burwash letterhead, 2pp. 4to., Jan. 19, 1977 to a lady. Fine content on his genealogy, in part: '...My relationship with the Russian Imperial Family is simple. Czar Alexander III was my father's first cousin and his son, Nicholas II married my mother's sister, Alexandra. I think the account called 'Nicholas and Alexandra' by Massey, a very fair one, and I met the author and congratulated him on his ...his impartial explanation of the trouble caused by their son...Alexei, being a haemophilic. It was because of this that Rasputin came into the family. He certainly was a genuine faith healer...But he could not, of course, heal [Alexei]...my distraught Aunt...turned to him. The fact that he was a dissolute and unsavory character seemed unimportant to her...I never met him myself...but I can remember...my father and mother deploring deploring [his] existence...nobody could persuade her to give him up...He certainly was a very sinister person...he was finally assassinated by my cousin, the Grand Duke Dimitri Pavlovitch, with the help of a mutual friend married to a relation of ours, Prince Felix Yousopoff, but of course, political assassination doesn't really solve anything...' Besides the wonderful genealogical content, Mountbatten's last statement was unheeded by some of his enemies - in August 1979, he was assassinated by a bomb planted aboard his fishing boat in Mullaghmore, County Sligo, Ireland, by members of the Provisional Irish Republican Army.
