LOUIS-MARC DE NOAILLES
(1756-1804) French aristocrat who served under Marquis de Lafayette, his brother-in-law, in the American Revolution, and was the officer who concluded the capitulation of Yorktown in 1781. A.L.S. ‘Louis de Noailles', 1p. 4to., Sept. 9, 1799, to Morgan L. Price [?]. In part: ‘...A Bill…has been presented to me for acceptance. I have directed the bearer of it in my hands at 24 hours, upon my receipt, which he has refused to do, as the acceptance will depend o[n] an answer from New York about a cargo there or of the determination of Mr. Sancher Mr. Alvaris' [?] friend who I must see…I will do my best to have the matter finished agreeable to your wishes. I must observe that Mr. Marius Alvaris had drawn on the 1st of February last upon Mr. Schweighausen [?] a bill which he accepted and which has been protected when at maturity. I have begun a law suit against that gentleman…'. At bottom is a note in another hand reading, in full: ‘Inform me by Howard, after hearing his answer, tomorrow morning if I must have the Bill noted for nonacceptance by a Notary. C. Price'. Folds, else fine.
