Description:

LOUIS LEBEGUE DUPORTAIL
(1743-1802) French general and Chief Engineer of the Continental Army with George Washington at Valley Forge and Monmouth, captured by the British. Manuscript L.S. ‘Durportail' 2pp. legal folio, Paris, Aug. 8, 1791, an angry letter as Minister of War concerning diplomatic affairs, directed to an unnamed official. In part: ‘…I have received, Sir, a [copy] of the letter you sent to the Minister of the Palatinate Elector. It surprised me greatly. The motive which guided you…is no doubt praiseworthy, but you surely would have abstained from writing this letter if you had [been thinking], because you would have seen how it could have displeased the Elector of this government. It is easy to see that the circumstances require great prudence in our attitude towards the Princes of the Empire. Furthermore, in the future, when any other affairs with the Princes is to be handled, refer them entirely to M. de Lucker…'. Very good condition, worthy of further research.
