Description:

LOTTA CRABTREE
(1847 - 1924) American actress, a favorite in California mining camps with her sprightly singing, dancing and reciting; in 1867, scored her first success in New York City in a dramatization of Charles Dickens' Old Curiosity Shop. Humorous T.L.S. "Lotta M. Crabtree" 2pp. 4to., on imprinted R.M.S Franconia letterhead bearing an embossed red crest of the Cunard steamship lines, July 14, 1912, to her dear friend, the noted food guru Curtis Freshel. The glamorous entertainer tells of her hurried visit to the bank before leaving for her trip and, in a self deprecating manner, she humbly relates: "...Going into my bank I flourished around and fell flat for no reason whatever, my bag flew open, money all over the place, people rushing to pick me up...I refused their help and sat down for just as long as I wanted, I was not to be bossed at all, so I sat there until I felt inclined to rise, which shewed a very wonderful spirit at the time for my position was not at all graceful. After having pulled myself together I laughed heartily for I did not hurt myself at all...It was splendid of you to write me a letter of introduction to Mr. Salt, and no doubt he will prove himself to be the 'salt of the earth' as you speak of him so highly. If you can come over while I am in London we will then, as you say, meet Bernard Shaw. It is very fortunate for me that you sent down to the steamer boxes of (vegetarian foods) Millennium Foods for the Head Steward has given me quite a number of delicious dishes, and I have enjoyed them very much...". Curtis Freshel and his wife, Emarel were good friends of the famous vegetarian George Bernard Shaw and had founded the "Milennium Guild", a vegetarian group in the U.S. which had been represented as far back as the 1926 IVU Congress. Mailing folds with one toned, boldly signed and very good overall.
