434. HENRY W. LONGFELLOW (1807-1882) American poet and author whose works include "The Song of Hiawatha", "The Psalm of Life" and "Paul Revere's Ride". Exceptionally early S.P. "Henry W. Longfellow", a 2 1/2" x 3 1/2" oval portrait ca. 1855 affixed to a 4to sheet, signed slightly off-center at bottom. Water-stained causing the image to be partially affixed to the glass which covers the entire piece, slight tears to the image at top and lower-right, paper mount stained at margins with tears at lower right: worthy of conservation. Certainly the earliest signed photo of Longfellow we've encountered.
