Description:

LONDON BLITZ FIREFIGHTING RELICS
A group of relics from a London firefighter of World War II. Included are: a a black identifying arm band with white lettering reading: "FIRE GUARD"; an ornate enameled A.F.S. collar pin; N.F.S. and A.F.S. uniform buttons; and a 66pp. government-issued booklet Incendiary Bombs and Fire Precautions, London: His Majesty's Stationery Office, 1939, offering detailed information on the handling and extinguishing of various fires caused by different incendiary bombs, with pphotos of the bombs, firefighting equipment and techniques, precautions, etc. Advertisements within include water pumps, classes for dealing with poison gas, etc. A fine grouping. The Auxiliary Fire Service (AFS) set up fire stations in buildings such as schools and garages and its members were given basic uniforms and worked with pumping units, such as trailer pumps. Sometimes London's firemen would go to other areas of the country to provide assistance, but there was often confusion over who was in control. The organisation of the fire services throughout the country needed to be unified and in 1941 the National Fire Service (NFS) took over. From the personal collection of World War II and Civil War historian Michael Miner. Miner's thirty-year collection was built through an extensive system of contacts he developed with artifact hunters and diggers in Europe and the Far East, and he maintained careful records of the items he amassed.
