Description:

LOGBOOK OF THE SCHOONER "CORA S. MCKAY", LOST IN THE GALVESTON HURRICANE
A pre-printed, blank ship''s logbook, an "Official Log-Book, Mercantile Marine of the United States", 72pp. 4to., printed after 1884 and issued to the Provincetown fishing schooner Cora S. McKay. The log bears no entries, but the name of the schooner is inscribed in black ink on the cover. A pencil inscription on the front flyleaf reads: "From June Rosenthal Pike, granddaughter of Capt. Roderick Matheson, master of ill-fated Sch. Cora S. McKay". The Cora S. McKay departed from Provincetown in May of 1900 to fish the Grand Banks, and became one of the northernmost victims of the Galveston Hurricane in September of that year, the deadliest natural disaster in U.S. History. The storm claimed at least 8,000 lives, including the 28 crewmen of the schooner. Ironically, five pages of the logbook are devoted to livesaving techniques, and feature illustrations of men performing artificial resuscitation on a drowning victim. Some paper loss to the front cover, with some soiling to the covers and toning throughout, else very good.
