133. JOHN A. LOGAN (1826 - 1886) Union major general whose successes at Belmont and Atlanta won him the praises of Grant and Sherman. He also founded Memorial Day. Fine manuscript L.S. "John A. Logan" while Representative from Illinois, 1p., 4to., on imprinted "Fortieth Congress, U.S." letterhead bearing a vignette of the Capitol, Washington, D.C., Feb. 25, 1868. He writes to Francis De Gress, formerly Captain of Battery H, 1st Illinois Light Artillery amid the furor surrounding the newly announced impeachment proceedings of Andrew Johnson. In part: "...Your letter on behalf of your friend was duly received and I would for your sake be glad to serve him but unfortunately I can help no one just now, the present administration being opposed to every one whom I endorse...You can depend upon me for any assistance in my power always. Affairs here at present are mixed but hope soon that they will have settled down on a quiet basis...". In very good condition. Just one day earlier, an unprecedented resolution was passed instituting impeachment proceedings against President Andrew Johnson in the House of Representatives. Logan was appointed to the Committee as one of the seven managers of the impeachment trial. $400 - 500
