Description:

Log book of the German naval vessel "Sud 5", 182pp. 13" x 9 1/2", the vessel largely based at Hamburg and under Captain Carl Thiessen. The "Isferm" was built in Norway in 1924 as a whaling vessel, and sold to Germans in 1937 when it was renamed "Sud 5". In November, 1939 the vessel began service as a tugboat for the naval artillery school, and from 1940, on was used as a diving operations vessel and as a convoy training ship for the submarine teaching school, probably at Kiel, and as an escort for U-boats leaving port. In May, 1945 "Sud 5" was captured and sent to Holland. The log book starts on Sep. 29, 1942 and contains daily entries until June 20, 1943. Largely untranslated but with reports on weather conditions, location, those attached to guard duties, and operations. Her locations include Kiel and Memel. Of specific interest are citations mentioning U-554, U-101, U-29, and U-52. U-101 and U-52 both had fine war records, and U-29 sank the British carrier COURAGEOUS. Should be researched.
